What is best to put in the ... corner?

Many people asks:

Question

What is best to put in the (east, south, north, west, southwest, southeast, northwest, northeast) corner?

Answer

It depends on the house. In authentic feng shui, houses must be analyzed as individuals.

Let’s say we both go to the same physician with the same complaint: a runny nose and headache. Depending on the doctor’s analysis, you may be prescribed bed rest because you have a cold — modern medicine doesn’t yet have antivirals that combat colds. I may be prescribed an antibiotic because I have a sinus infection, which is caused by bacteria (antibiotics can kill them).

Many illnesses share symptoms; only a competent doctor can tell the difference between a cold and a sinus infection.

It is a similar situation when you compare authentic feng shui and McFengshui. People who claim that every northwest (or other) corner in every building on Earth has the same meaning and therefore “cures” are like doctors who prescribe antibiotics for every ailment!

Would you trust that sort of doctor to know what’s really going on?

If you have questions about arranging furniture and objects in your house, hire an interior decorator. If you have questions about the house and its effects on the occupants, then hire a competent feng shui practitioner.

How do you determine absolute north without a compus? I have a general idea but I want to be more precise.
Also, in an apartment, would the location of the front door indicate the direction that the living unit is facing?

Thank you.
